The ‘Sexy Lamp Test’ is a play on the more famous Bechdel Test, created by Allison Bechdel, a litmus for weighing a piece of media’s value in representing women. The Bechdel test itself has been labeled as a low bar to reach, yet many Oscar winning films do not achieve its standard, or the still lower standard of the Sexy Lamp Test.

Gold and black velvet adorn these symbols of objectified femininity. These electric sex symbols are no doubt hilarious in their role in ‘A Christmas Story’ (1983) however, any amount of humor does not erase the fact that little Ralphie’s own mother could easily be replaced by the lamp she so hated and her son’s story would continue on.
